Welcome to Commercial Creative Theory

Welcome to Commercial Creative Theory on the VGS

Commercial Creative Theory is my way of sharing the workflows, methods, and lessons I’ve learned over my 20-year career in commercial art. Through this series, I’ll give you an inside look at the strategies I’ve used as a web designer, developer, photographer, and more. This section of The Vector Graphic Store exists to break down the creative chaos that has shaped my journey. If you’re someone who navigates both the left and right brain in your work, you’ll probably relate.

My career has been a balancing act—or more like controlled chaos! As the owner of Calypso Development, I’ve worn many hats over the years. I’ve been a Graphic Designer, Full Stack Web Developer, Search Engine Optimization Specialist, Photographer, Videographer, Drone Photographer, and even a 3D Modeler. And yes, that’s a lot, but when you’re running a one-person show most of the time, you learn to get things done—no excuses.

I’ve always believed that specializing too much can limit your growth. My experience hasn’t been shaped by big agencies or massive teams; I’ve done things solo for most of my career. That’s taught me to be resourceful, flexible, and constantly open to learning. Honestly, I’m a student, always. No matter how much I’ve mastered, there’s always something new to discover, and that’s what keeps me humble and driven.

I started out in graphic design and photography, where I learned the ropes from my uncle, Paul Cichocki, who taught me to be a “Photoshop Jedi.” He also introduced me to the world of commercial photography, and that opened up a new realm of creativity for me. From there, I dove into web design and development—because I figured, why not make my designs functional? One thing led to another, and before long, I was into cinematography, drones, and 3D modeling. I’m the kind of person who jumps into what excites me, knowing that with enough practice, I’ll get better.

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned? Adaptability. From photography to 3D modeling to blockchain development, I’ve always pushed myself to evolve with the industry. Drones were a game-changer—I was obsessed from the moment I got my hands on one. Whether it’s learning new tech or refining an old skill, I’ve never stopped pushing forward.

Meditation has helped me balance my obsession with work. It reminds me not to identify too deeply with any single skill. Bruce Lee’s quote, “Empty your mind. Be formless. Shapeless. Like water,” really resonates with me. It’s a constant reminder to stay adaptable and flow with the changes in my career.

Looking back, if I could sum up my journey, I’d say there’s wisdom in knowledge, but true power comes from applying that knowledge. That’s what I hope to pass on through Commercial Creative Theory. I’ll be sharing workflows, tricks, and insights I’ve gathered over the years to help you navigate the commercial art world—whether you’re a designer, developer, or anything in between.

Stay tuned for more tips, techniques, and stories from my creative journey. I hope you find value in what I share and that it helps you carve your own path in this wild world of commercial art.
